A RECORD number of 11 lakh examinees will appear in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations-2006 across the country beginning from March 1.

Elaborate preparations have been made to ensure that examinees do not use unfair means.

A three-tier security arrangement has also been made for surprise checks by flying squads of the CBSE, the Directorate of Education and special observers.

According to the regional office sources here, a total of 6,46,387 students including 3,77,448 boys and 2,68,939 girls will appear for Class 10 examinations this year as compared to 6,06,632 students in 2005--an increase of 6.55 per cent in the strength.

Besides, as many as 4,54,045 students comprising 2,63,286 boys and 1,90,759 girls will appear for the Class 12 examinations this year as compared to last year's 4,21,463 candidates, registering an increase of 7.04 per cent.

While the Class XII examinations will begin on March 1 with the English paper, the Class X exams will begin with Social Science paper on March 2.

The Board officials said that for Class XII the next paper would be History and Biotechnology among other subjects on March 3.

Physics paper has been scheduled for March 4 and Political Science, Marketing and Microbiology will be some of the subjects scheduled for March 6.

For Science students, the paper on Biology will be on March 7.

While the Business Studies exam will be held on March 8, the paper on Sociology will be on March 9, Mathematics on March 11, Chemistry on March 17 and Accountancy on March 18.

The last paper for Class XII will be Music on April 8.

Under the new plan announced by CBSE a few days back, students will be allowed entry into the examination centres 45 minutes before the specified time on the first day and 30 minutes on subsequent days.

Examinees, for the first time, will now get a cool-off time of 15 minutes for running through the question paper .

The Board has taken this initiative to bring down the level of stress among the students both during the period of learning as well as during the examinations.

Board sources said that it was often witnessed that the examinees enter the examination hall with stress and on receipt of the question paper they start answering the questions immediately without adequate planning and application of mind.

While the exam will start as usual at 10-30 a.m., the question paper will be distributed at around 10-15 a.m., giving students ample time to fill personal details on the answer sheet and read the question paper properly.

The Board has also increased the number of pages in the main answer books to avoid handling of supplementary sheets.

Sources disclosed that the question papers have been designed in such a way that these can be completed within two-and-a-half hours.

The amendment made to Rule 43(ii) of the examination by-laws, would now allow students who fail in their sixth subject to take the compartmental or improvisation exam in the same year.
