Addressing separate press conferences here today, TDP Politburo member Nagam Janardhana Reddy and CPM State Secretary B V Raghavulu said the Liberation Day functions should be officially organised by the government.

"The Liberation Day is officially celebrated in Hyderabad-Karnataka and Marathwada regions. Why doesn't the AP Government follow suit?" Nagam asked.

Raghavulu recalled that they have been raising this demand for many years but the government remained indifferent.

The two Left parties (CPM and CPI) would celebrate the occasion on a grand scale, he added.

The TDP and CPM have joined Telangana Rashtra Samiti and BJP in demanding that the Liberation Day be celebrated officially by the government.

A delegation of BJP leaders recently met Chief Minister K Rosaiah and pressed its demand. The Chief Minister, however, told the BJP leaders that he could not set a new precedent by celebrating the Liberation Day officially.

Hyderabad State, which was under Nizam rule, acceded to the Indian Union in 1948.
