Celebrating the Indian woman?s wheel of life
Alexandra Sanchez Gavito de Faesler?s A Woman?s Wheel Of Life (Viva) was released on Tuesday evening at The Oberoi.
It was an evening of surprises. One major surprise was that none of the women who had featured in Alexandra Sanchez Gavito de Faesler’s A Woman’s Wheel Of Life (Viva) had read the book, released on Tuesday evening at The Oberoi. Neither had the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jagmohan, who was the chief guest. But in a way, it only added to everybody’s curiosity and eagerness to grab a copy of the book.
“I’m really curious to read what is there in the book,” said Anjolie Ela Menon, one of the many women featured in the book. “I hope I have enough money to buy a copy. I spent so much at Dilli Haat today,” said Arpana Caur, another of the women featured in the book. From the 30 women who are part of the book, nearly made it for the evening. And two of them travelled all the way from Ahmedabad and Mumbai. “Alexandra is such a nice person that I had to come,” said Mrinalini Sarabhai. The other, Shubha Mudgal, made a quiet entry and preferred to remain her low-key self. “While one savours the feeling of being celebrated, there is also this ugly reminder of women being tortured and tormented,” she said when asked about her feelings about being a part of the book.
The book was released by Jagmohan, who said that “though it’s about women, it’s not a feminist book.” The book has been a result of two years of meeting people and travelling across the country. “It was fascinating to meet these women, all of whom are just remarkable in their own right,” said author Alexandra Sanchez Gavito de Faesler, wife of the Ambassador of Mexico to India. Those present included Jacqueline Lundquist, wife of former US Ambassador to India, in town to attend Priti Paul’s wedding, Sunita Kohli, Philip McDonagh, the Irish Ambassador to India, artist Jatin Das and German Ambassador Heimo Richter.
