Chautalas get ready to fight each other
Om Prakash Chautala’s two nephews, who joined the BJP as they did not believe in their uncle’s policies, now plan to contest the polls against him.india Updated: Sep 19, 2014 02:02 IST
In a true example of family members turning against each other, two nephews of Om Prakash Chautala have broken ranks with the INLD to join the BJP, and one of them is also raring to contest against the Chautalas in the upcoming assembly polls.
The nephews Aditya and Aniruddha, who are also the grandsons of Devi Lal, formally joined the BJP at the culmination of the Vijay Sankalp Yatra in the presence of foreign minister Sushma Swaraj in Jind on August 31.
Aditya has conveyed to the BJP brass his will to contest from one of the Chautala strongholds of Ellenabad, Dabwali or Uchana to wrest the true legacy of his grandfather from the Chautalas.
Ellenabad is held currently by Abhay Chautala, Om Prakash Chautala was elected in 2009 from Uchana and Ajay Chautala is the sitting MLA from Dabwali.
“While the Chautala family claims to be the sole inheritors of our grandfather Devi Lal’s legacy, they have tarnished the family by ignoring his ideals altogether,” said Aditya.
“While Devi Lal was a towering personality and a symbol of farmers’ struggle, the Chautalas have indulged in corruption and nepotism and land grab. I want to contest against the Chautalas to tell them that legacies are passed on to the worthy and not the usurpers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abhay Chautala, — who is solely managing the affairs of the INLD in the absence of his elder brother and father who are in jail over corruption charges — said his brothers have been led astray by vested interests who would only use them as pawns.
“Soon, they will realise this. Besides, asking for a ticket and actually getting it are two different things. They lost the right to talk about Devi Lal’s ideals the day they joined the BJP. The seeds of the INLD were sown by Devi Lal and anybody who betrays his party betrays him. Now that they are in BJP will they follow his ideals or those of Narend-ra Modi and Amit Shah?” said Abhay.
