A Cobra team had an encounter with suspected ultras in the same district on Friday night, in which eight villagers and a jawan were killed.

Sunday's incident took place when the 199 Battalion Cobra (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), a specialised unit of CRPF, was on a search operation in the border region of Dantewada and Bijapur districts in south Bastar.

"When the patrolling party reached jungles of Basaguda, rebels opened fire, injuring two security men."

"Security forces retaliated, which forced the Naxals to flee to the forest," a senior official said in Raipur.

The injured jawans - Lakshman Singh (22) and Chhabilal (24) - were airlifted to Raipur's MMI hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.
