He was identified as Irfan Sheikh alias Sultan alias Sameer from Mumbai.

He was arrested while he was reportedly on his way to extort money from one of the richest doctors in the city who owns a nursing home in Rambagh, sources said.

Some important documents, including telephone numbers and a revolver, were recovered from his possession.

Several cases of attempted murders, two extortion cases and other cases under the Gangster Act are registered against him in Mumbai.

Additional superintendent of police Ashok Tripathi, heading the STF team in Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi and Gorakhpur, told mediapersons that Irfan Sheikh hailed from Nawabganj in the district. He was assigned the task of extorting money from doctors, engineers and contractors in the city, he said.

Both Chhota Rajan and Vicky operated from Malaysia, Dubai and Behrain, and Irfan had been working for them from Mumbai, he said.

During interrogation by the STF, Irfan confessed his involvement in extorting money from rich persons through his gang of youngsters who spread terror by firing indiscriminately to cow down people. The Mumbai police had been looking for Irfan, who had been absconding since the past two-and-a-half years.

Irfan confessed that he had employed some youngsters from his hometown in Mumbai who were given arms to carry out the extortion racket controlled by the Chhota Rajan gang.

Irfan had been getting money through ‘hawala’ and kept in touch with the mafia through satellite phones.

Some local telephone numbers of people with whom he had been in touch were also found. The STF plans to interrogate these persons after securing the printouts.

The additional SP said Irfan was in the process of consolidating his base in the city. After arresting him, they lodged a case of attempted murder against him for firing at the police team.

He was being interrogated for more information prior to being produced before a magistrate.
