Children not to run in Olympic torch relay
School children from the national capital would line up along the Rajpath to cheer the participants in Thursday's Olympic torch relay event, but will not be taking part in the actual 2.5-km run.
The Delhi Government has cancelled the cultural event to be performed by the school girl students at the venue, citing security reasons.
Since the children have never participated in such relays in the past, there was no question of their joining the event this time as well, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
However, she said the school children will be present at the main function of the event as decided earlier.
Initially, about 3,000 students were supposed to participate in the event but following controversies and security threats, only 1,500 students will attend the function.
"Appropriate arrangements have been taken to ensure their safety," a government official said.
The students would line up along the Rajpath where elaborate security arrangements have been made to ward off any trouble, mainly from Tibetan protesters who have vowed to disrupt the rally.
