City hotel offers fish for company

Have you ever considered eating a five-star gourmet meal with a goldfish as a dinner companion? It might sound like a loony idea, but the folks at the Renaissance don’t think so.
In a bid to make sure that guests at the hotel never want for company, the management has launched ‘Conversations with Luis’, where a goldfish in a bowl is placed at the table of single diners to accompany them through a meal.
“The idea was thought up by Sherman Almedia, our restaurant operations manager. We started it around 18 months ago, especially for our business guests who have to dine alone. Most of them get fed up of ordering room service and prefer to come down to the restaurants to eat,” says Manish Garg, food and beverage manager.
There are currently four fish in four bowls, all coincidentally named Luis. They may be great listeners, but you shouldn’t get too attached, because the hotel won’t allow patrons to take the fish home.
“We take care of the goldfish, feed them at the appropriate time and clean their tanks. We’re not sure how well the patron would be able to take care of it, so we’d rather not give them away,” Garg adds.
So how many diners have benefited from this idea? “I would say around 800 to 1000 diners have shared a meal with Luis so far,” Garg responds. “And we have not, till now had a single negative response. Some guests even ask for the goldfish if they’re returning to the hotel after a while.”
Any plans to name the fish after the person who came up with the idea? “I don’t know,” Garg laughs. “We’ll have to ask Sherman if he’s comfortable with that.”
