Renowned classical singer of Varanasi Pt Channu Lal Mishra and tabla player Lalit Kumar Pandey were invited to the wedding reception. Sources said Kiran Rao had especially invited Pundit Mishra to perform at the reception.
He enthralled the guests by his rendition of ‘dadra’, ‘thumri’, ‘chaita’, ‘chaiti’ and ‘ghato’.
His renditions of ‘Jai Shiv Shanker aughar dani’, ‘Basurian ab na bajao Shyam’, ‘Lage tose nain’ and ‘Tore naina ki lagi katar’ were much appreciated.
He concluded the programme by a famous ‘kazari’ of Mirzapur- ‘Bhaiya more aye awnaiyawa, sawanva mai na jaibo nandi’- and Benarsi ‘kazari’- ‘Barsan lagi badariya room jhoo ke’.
Pt Channu Lal Mishra dwelt upon the importance of ‘dadra’, ‘thumri’, ‘chaita’, ‘chaiti’ and ‘ghato’.
Talking to HT here on Tuesday, Pt Channu Lal Mishra expressed concern over the shortage of classical music singers in Varanasi to preserve and develop the traditional style of music.
He said it was the need of the hour to propagate the traditional style of Benaras gharana in classical music.
