According to the Nagar Nigam's draft report the city has always been known for the presence of premier educational institutions and the trend of education seems to reflect in the literacy rate as well. However all-out efforts have to be made to increase the female literacy rate.

It states that the Census of India, 2001 records 80.9% of city population to be literate, which is the highest in the region. However the prevailing gender gap is an issue of concern. There is an overall improvement from the past decade, when the literacy rate in the city was 62.8%9. Male population has a higher literacy level with 70% while only 53.7% for females.

Kanpur stands second with 78.8% while Lucknow third with 77.1%, Varanasi fourth with 72.0% and Agra fifth with 70.81%. The male female gap of Kanpur is 9.0 per cent, Agra 9.8 %, Varanasi 14.6 % and Lucknow 13.7%, said the report.
