IT WAS the night they had been waiting for days. On the last night of 2005, party-goers in Prayag had a blast. And, they survived! Unexpectedly, (we are not known for it, isn't it?) thousands of Allahabadis flocked at different restaurants and hotels to march into the New Year with style. Expectedly, Civil Lines remained the centre of activities.

Unexpectedly, (we are not known for it, isn't it?) thousands of Allahabadis flocked at different restaurants and hotels to march into the New Year with style. Expectedly, Civil Lines remained the centre of activities.
While celebrations were planned in advance at almost all major hotels and hang-outs, those, who could not afford the costly nightouts, took to roads. As a result, there was a party at almost every crossing in Civil Lines area.
Even roadside shops did a brisk business. Mega dance party was held at Hotel Milan which was packed to its capacity. Small get-togethers were also arranged by various social organisations and clubs.
Many a roadside dhaba on the outskirts of the city organised DJ nights. New Year bashes were also thrown by private coaching centres and a handful of those belonging to elite class organised programmes at their farm houses. And, the most sought after commodity on the last day of the year 2005 was, of course, liquor.
The winds provided the much-needed excuse to arrange high 'booze parties' everywhere.
Celebrations were also reported at several institutions like the Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) and the Allahabad Agriculture Institute (AAI-DU). Interestingly, those, who are fond of moral policing, were also roaming around everywhere with watchful eyes but they preferred not to play spoilsports and so the merry-making went on till the wee hours.
