The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has set a 30-day deadline during which if it continues to receive complaints, the ban will be implemented.

“We will keep a watch for a month. If pet owners ignore the warning, we will have to take action and ban pets,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner R.A Rajeev.

The BMC will issue a public notice to this effect soon.

Anyone violating the order will risk their pets being taken away and will to pay a hefty fine to get them back.

The announcement comes after a meeting with the Marine Drive Residents’ Association, which has complained about the pets and demanded that the BMC take action to prevent pets from dirtying the recently-revamped promenade.

Seven clean-up marshals work to keep the walkway clean, and dog owners are fined Rs 500 if their pets poop there. “We fine at least two dog owners a day, but people don’t clear the mess,” said ward officer Sunil Dhamne.
