Communal tension has been reported in Haatpipliya and Chapra in neighbouring district of Dewas after a man from a particular community allegedly molested an eight-year-old girl in Haatpipliya on Wednesday morning.
According to police sources, the accused aged around 40 was arrested soon after the incident and brought to the police station. However, a large number of activists belonging to Hindutva outfits gehraoed the police station demanding that the accused be handed over to them. When the police refused they started venting their ire by throwing stones at shops and houses of members of a particular community. There was tension and panic in the area as the police drove away the ghearoing mob. They also overturned a number of handcarts as they fled from the police station.
From Haatpipliya the arson spread to Chapra which is around 8 kms away. Here also they set fire to a few shops belonging to members of a particular community, and also set fire on a motorcycle and a four wheeler. According to eyewitnesses the police had to fire in the air to disperse the crowd, though police officials are not confirming. The miscreants fled as soon as the police including the SP IP Kulshestra and collector Uma Kant Rao reached the spot.
However, soon after that there was trouble in village Shyampur where houses of members of a particular community were damaged.
The series of attacks angered the members of the opposing community and there was danger of the situation getting out of hand. Apart from the SP and Collector, the Minister and Dewas MLA Tukojirao Puar also rushed to the spot and talked to the people from both the sides.
SP IP Kulshestra said that the situation is now completely under control. He said they were trying to identify the miscreants and take action against them. He said there have been no major injuries in all the incidents.
DIG Ujjain Range Ajay Sharma has also reportedly rushed to the troubled spots to monitor the situation.
