Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said on Thursday that a comprehensive plan would be formulated for institutional funding to take up flood protection measures in Jammu and Kashmir on priority.
A high level committee headed by chief secretary would be constituted to arrange institutional finances for taking up the works, wherever required, Mufti told the state assembly.
He said special allocations would also be made for this sector keeping in view the requirements in various areas.
The rural development department has also been asked to take up flood protection works under various centrally sponsored schemes by giving focus to the priority areas.
Intervening during supplementaries to a question of opposition NC member Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, he said due to scanty rains and drought-like situation in the state during the past 5-6 years, the state was saved of floods. Thus allocations for this sector were quite meagre.
He said special funds have been provided by the coalition government for desilting several canals, both in Kashmir and Jammu regions, to provide adequate water for irrigation.
