PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has held the coalition government partner Congress, equally responsible for not allowing devolution of power and, thus, denying people of their legitimate rights.
“It is a fact that the National Conference is notorious for undermining sanctity of democratic institutions in the state, but it is very unfortunate that the Congress, which is part of the present government, is also playing dubious role as far as strengthening of panchayati raj institutions or holding civic bodies elections in the state are concerned”, Mufti said while addressing a public meeting in Mishriwalla area of Raipur-Domana assembly segment.
“The National Conference is a stumbling block in decentralising power at the grass-root level, but the role of the Congress party is also not worth praising with regard to strengthening of local self-government,” he said.
Referring to the repeated statements being given by the Congress leaders on 73rd and 74th Amendments in public, Mufti said failure of the government to strengthen panchayati raj institutions in the state was a clear indication that Congress leaders were giving statements only for public consumption but internally they were also not serious in strengthening democracy at grass-root level.
The former chief minister said more than two years had elapsed since panchayat elections were held, but till date the government had failed to hold the block development councils (BDCs) elections, which was dishonour to the mandate given by people.
