"Congress party will welcome any leader or any political party on an all-India scale to contest against Gandhi in Rae Bareli including Uma Bharti", party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

These parties, he said, would have to keep in mind the political history from Indira Gandhi to Rajiv Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi which spans through not only Rae Bareli but Chikmaglur, Medak and Bellary where the BJP nominee was Sushma Swaraj, former colleague of Bharti.

"Let the people have one more opportunity to know who stands in how much water", Singhvi said.

Singhvi's remarks came close on the heels of statement of Bharti favouring a joint opposition candidate against Gandhi.
