Talking to newsmen, Cell chairman Abdul Mannan said Muslims had been traditional voters of the Congress in Kanpur City, giving it preference over the ruling Samajwadi Party.

In order to consolidate the vote bank, Mannan has been assigned the responsibility to mobilise community members for the rally.

Mannan is the most acceptable face of the Congress among Muslims and he also held the coveted post of District Congress president for 10 years before being replaced last month only.

“The rath will be flagged off from Sisamau on August 6. It will cover both the Sisamau and Kalyanpur Assembly constituencies,” stated Mannan. On August 7, it would cover Arya Nagar and Generalganj Vidhan Sabha constituency and a public meeting would also be held at Patkhapur, he added.

Canvassing would continue even on August 8 till the start of the rally and Govind Nagar and Cantonment Vidhan Sabha constituencies would be covered, remarked Mannan.

A special meeting has also been convened at the party office on August 4 and national general secretary Ashok Ghelot will preside over the meeting while Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal will attend the meeting.

To intensify its campaign for the rally, a public meeting will be held at the busy Colonelganj Crossing tonight and Jaiswal will address the gathering. The DCC will also held another meeting at the Meston Road on August 5.

Meanwhile, a padyatra was taken out by the Youth Congress activists and a door-to-door campaign was also carried out at Rajapurwa slum colony to mobilise people’s support for the rally. Former party MLA Bhudhar Narain Mishra led the march.

Mishra solicited the support of Dalits community and lambasted the State Government for rising crime graph in the State.

The Youth Congress has also planned a series of public meetings and torch processions to muster support for Sonia Gandhi’s rallyat historic Phoolbagh ground.
