The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the apex decision-making body of the party, on Saturday congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government for successful negotiations on the India-US civil nuclear energy cooperation agreement.

Manmohan Singh briefed the top body of the Congress, which leads the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), on last week's parleys between two sides in Washington on the historic deal that will open up the doors of global nuclear commerce for India after three decades.

"The CWC congratulated the prime minister and the government of India for successfully steering the negotiations to a satisfactory conclusion consistent with the letter and spirit of the commitments made to Parliament and the nation," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said after the two-hour meeting chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi.
