Congress gears up for civic polls
THE CONGRESS is gearing up for the Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) election.
Talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, newly appointed City Congress Committee chief Rais Ahmed said the party would start the process of receiving application forms from prospective candidates from Monday onwards.
He also said party workers would organise ‘padyatras’ in every ward.
“Several issues such as increase in house tax rates, poor condition of roads and the problem of waterlogging will be raised during the padyatras,” he said. He warned that if the district administration did not consider the demands, the City Congress Committee would launch a massive movement soon.
He said party workers would not tolerate displacement of the poor by the VNN in the name of beautification.
“Development and beautification work should be done after ensuring proper rehabilitation of poor people,” he said.
He added that grass roots level workers would be appointed presidents of wards.
Besides this, partymen would mount pressure on the administration for effective implementation of the Union Government’s welfare schemes, he added.
He appreciated the efforts of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and local MP Rajesh Mishra to increase the quota of Haj pilgrims from 21,800 to 27,300 in Uttar Pradesh.
