Congress MP from Maharashtra and media tycoon Vijay Darda praised Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, terming him a "tiger", putting his party in a spot.
"Modi's commitment and dedication towards work bears resemblance to that of a tiger. He is also a tiger of Gujarat," said Darda at a function in Ahmedabad where he was given an award for social service through the media. In Delhi, Congress gave a guarded response amid indications that the Rajya Sabha member would be in trouble with the party's top leadership.
"We will first find out all the facts from the in-charge of party affairs in the state. Only after finding out the details we will decide what should be done," said Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi.
Congress leader Mohan Prakash is in-charge of party affairs in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Darda shared the dais with BJP heavyweight Modi and yoga guru Baba Ramdev at the event organised by a Jain religious institute of Tarun Vijay Maharaj.
Following Darda's praise, Modi said, "I will not be surprised to read in breaking news that Darda has been asked to explain his comment here."
Darda, however, was quick to clarify after the function that his comments were not political.
"This is a religious function, so I just expressed my feelings. There is nothing political about it. In our culture, we always speak well of the host. None of my comments should be misconstrued as political remarks."
