Contaminated water kills 5

Five persons, including three children, have died and 182 have been hospitalised with diarrhoea, caused by suspected contaminated drinking water supply, in densely populated locality of Bholakpur in Secunderabad. Ashok Das reports.

Five persons, including three children, have died and 182 have been hospitalised with diarrhoea, caused by suspected contaminated drinking water supply, in densely populated locality of Bholakpur in Secunderabad.

The case started surfacing when several residents from the densely populated locality of Bholakpur in Secunderabad area reported a sudden bout of diarrohea coupled with high fever.

The residents accuse the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board of negligence. According to the residents, drinking water supplied by the board has got mixed up with a sewage pipeline.

Two hundred residents with similar symptoms have been treated at the government-run Gandhi Hospital.

State Chief Secretary P Ramakanth Reddy, held a high-level meeting to review the situation and directed Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) additional Commissioner Neetu Kumari Prasad to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report in three days.
