Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) GK Goswami had ordered constitution of a special cell to track down missing mobiles. Good job. But, here is some food for thought that might activate your grey cells!

A Press release issued by the SSP office mentions the name of the mobile owners whose cell phones were recovered along with details like the model type, its cost and when it was lost and recovered.

At the bottom of the press note is some information about those whose mobiles were lost. Take a look at some of the names of persons whose mobiles have been recovered so far: Justice AK Agarwal, deputy superintendent of police, AK Arya, Engineer, LESA, Simranjeet (son of IJS Chawla, treasury officer, Tees Hazari, Delhi), Mohd Tariq Khan, director Fourth Pillar Academy, Vibhor Kumar from Reliance, KC Gupta, personal assistant at the Vidhan Parishad, Secretariat, Dr VC Tripathi, Medical Officer, Hardoi and Constable Ajay Singh, CBI.

Do these select names suggest something? All these persons, including CBI, constable are no commoners. The cops may have done a good job recovering the cell phones, but what about the common man who has to run from the pillar to post to even get an FIR lodged when he loses his cell?

The other aspect that is rather curious is that no arrests have been made by the cops on paper. Did the cops, on finding these phones lying on the ground, just pick them up and gave themselves a pat on their back? SSP says scores of people who had lost any hope of getting back their mobiles were overjoyed at the recovery.

And from where were these mobiles recovered? In the absence of any credible police version, the popular perception again casts a shadow on the role of the cops.

Obviously, the cell phones might have been recovered from those who were using it. Some mobile sets like that of Ambarish Kumar Arya was recovered after a year.

Were it the cops aware who stole it? Then why aren’t any arrests shown? Is it possible that the cops let go the culprits (assuming they had identified them) for a price and then pleased the influential people too by getting them their handsets back?

The cops didn’t forget to mention that the total cost of the handsets recovered was approximately Rs 1.95 lakh.
