Couple commits suicide for Rs 8

A young couple committed suicide in West Bengal after they were rebuked by the man's father for borrowing Rs 8 to meet a deficit for buying a garment.

News reports on Tuesday said 22-year-old daily labourer Raju Patra and his 19-year-old wife Panchami consumed poison on Sunday night after Raju's father Indranath pulled them up for taking the loan.

The incident occurred in Ponan village in East Midnapore district, about 100 km from Kolkata.

Police said Indranath was furious when he got to know from an acquaintance that his son had borrowed money to buy a garment for his wife.

He raised the issue during dinner and the couple felt humiliated. They locked themselves in a room and consumed poison. They were rushed to hospital but both died on way.
