The Patna High Court on Tuesday ordered a ban on the manufacture and use of polythene bags of less than 20 microns and recycled polythene bags in Bihar.

Taking a serious note of the rampant use of non-permissible polythene bags by shopkeepers in Patna, the court came up with the immediate ban following a public interest litigation.

It also directed the state government to ensure that polythene bags are not distributed in the market.

Last week, the court asked the Patna district administration to locate illegal polythene-producing units and take appropriate actions to shut them down.
