It may be mentioned the government had given this project to Unitech to set up a high-tech city between Rohania and Mohansarai on 2200-acre land in Varanasi.

Talking with media persons, here on Tuesday, a member of the Central Committee of CPI (M) Suneet Chopra and Member of Parliament from West Bengal Sunil Khan criticised the Samajwadi Party for playing with the interests of farmers in the name of development.

Chopra said it was not fair to use fertile agricultural land for development of a city. Instead, he suggested, the government could set up the city on infertile land. He added any project for construction or development of the city should be approved through the city development committee under section 243 (D) and (E) which was yet to take shape in Uttar Pradesh.

“Instead of forming city development committee and seeking approval for such developmental projects, the State Government has been indulging in handing such projects to MNCs,” he alleged. Chopra said the Union Government had issued a notice to the UP Government to form a city development committee.

Khan said the State Government should make efforts to increase yield of food grains rather than destroy fertile land.

Both leaders said their party would extend all possible support to farmers, who were going to be displaced once this project started coming up. They said they could never let this happen. Both leaders addressed a public meeting at Karauta Bazar in Varanasi and criticised the government.
