Creating havoc

The AAI employees’ strike over the privatisation of the Mumbai and Delhi airports is illegal and bound to create problems for passengers (Stuck in a strike, February 2). It will also send wrong signals to foreign airlines who are eager to take advantage of the open-sky policy.

What’s worse is the fact that certain political parties are senselessly promoting this situation. The government must bear the responsibility to see that the quality of services at the airports do not suffer.

The government wants world-class and passenger-friendly airports at Mumbai and Delhi. These alterations could have taken place without involving private firms. The AAI employees have been promised job security, by imposing a deputation for three years. But the government has not specified what their situation will be after these three years.
Also problematic is the possibility of private parties hiking charges in order to provide better services. And these will have to be borne by the passengers.

What worries the agitating employees more than the handing over of airport functioning to private parties is the accountability that this will impose.

Bias against Iran
Apropos of the editorial Watch out, fence-sitters (February 1), the Security Council members’ decision to pull up Iran for its nuclear enrichment programme is a biased decision.
If the Security Council members are so worried, why have they themselves not closed down their nuclear reactors? They have conducted more tests than Iran possesses n-weapons.

America is trying to get India to vote against Iran at the United Nations Security Council. India being a non-aligned country like Iran is on tenterhooks and it should handle this issue diplomatically. We should send a message to Iran that it should not spread havoc in West Asia.
