FORMER HEAD of Vocal music Department in the Performing Arts Faculty of Banaras Hindu University, Prof. Pradeep Kumar Dixit voiced concern on Friday over lack of creativity in the field of music. He stressed the need for greater attention while translating musical terms into English and added that there were some myths which must be eliminated.

Prof Dixit was delivering the inaugural address at a two-day national seminar on ‘Uniqueness of Music and its Various Dimensions’ at Basant Kanya Mahavidyalaya (affiliated to BHU ) in Kamachcha today. The seminar is being organised by the BHU in collaboration with the University Grants Commission.

Prof Dixit asked whether repetition or imitation could be called creativity and did artistes really create something new every time and pointed out that only that artiste achieved fame who really introduced a new creation in his presentation.

“Great artists do the same thing differently and this is creativity”, he said, adding that music was a discipline components of which were abstract.

He said that the uniqueness of music lay in the fact that it produced the maximum with the minimum resources. “The need of the hour is honesty. Learn honestly, teach honestly, present honestly and music will scale new heights”, he said.

Padm Shri Balwant Rai Bhatt ‘Bhavrang’ talked about the superiority of Raga Bhairavi and the value of a true ‘bhakt’.
