“MORE THAN one crore people in desert areas are facing water shortage problem. After facing such problems it is not appropriate to oppose construction of dams on the river Narmada,” according to former SEBI chairman D R Mehta who took part in a discussion on ‘Human rights and need for large dams’, recently organized by Abhyas Mandal and CEPRD here.

Mehta said that the issue of earthquake caused due to construction of dams should be a matter of concern for technicians. Dams are necessary for water supply and for irrigation and domestic purposes.

He however said people of the villages coming under the submergence area of the dam construction should be rehabilitated with proper planning and thus people should consider both the aspects of construction of dams.

Economist Sharad Jain while presiding over the programme said that construction of dam would result in increase in agriculture produce, electricity and increase in underground water level. But rehabilitation policy should be made and implemented in such a manner so that those who are rehabilitated should not face any problem.

He also lauded Medha Patkar for taking initiative for the cause. Former advocate general Anand Mohan Mathur welcomed the guests. Ashok Kothari conducted the programme.
