The government's response came on a petition filed by Haseena seeking a direction to it to issue her a passport.

Justifying its action to deny her passport, the Centre submitted that she tried to hide her identity by furnishing wrong surname in her application.

"She may travel abroad and misuse her passport for aiding and abetting criminal activities of her brother and his associates and therefore keeping in mind the security of India and public interest at large, the passport has not been issued," the government said in its affidavit filed by advocate Sanjeev Kumar Dubey.

The 12-page affidavit said there would be threat to the nation if she is issued a passport and allowed to go abroad.

"She is a real sister of notorious gangster Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. As she is the sister of the gangster who is wanted in several cases registered in Mumbai, there is apprehension of causing harm to the sovereignty and unity of India if passport facility is granted to her," the affidavit said.
