DDA goes chic, new flats to be modern and green

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is planning a complete makeover of its flats, adopting snazzy, contemporary designs for its new batch of energy-efficient ‘green’ flats. The new flats will come up in the next two years.
Junking its 50-year-old practice of enforcing the same bare-minimum, uniform design for all its residential projects, the DDA plans to address frequent complaints by consumers of lack of space, poor design and bad quality of construction in its flats.
The DDA flats, however, are popular with Delhiites for their affordability and superior location.
“We don’t want to continue with the old designs. For years, the DDA has been using standard, uniform designing, which will not happen anymore,” DDA vice-chairman Balvinder Kumar told Hindustan Times.
“All our new projects, both residential and commercial, would also be energy efficient green buildings,” he added.
The DDA, which employs a small army of architects, designers and engineers, will now also take the help of private architects to come up with the best possible design. “Each housing project will be treated separately and we will get private consultants on board for each project,” Kumar said. Competitions to create the best design for residential complexes may also be organized.
The DDA is working on more than 30,000 flats currently, which include one, two and three BHK flats and housing for the economically weaker sections.
Sources in the DDA indicated that the new designs won’t be implemented in its ongoing projects and that new projects will be treated differently. Kumar also added that the DDA will go for third party audit of all its projects to address complaints of poor quality of construction in its projects.
