“Former prime minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong perhaps thinks of education in terms of merchandise. As a matter of fact, the discipline of management as grafted in India is still a stale copy of western managerialism. In fact, the IIMs have been importing agency of western managerialism, thus superimposing an inorganic growth over the developmental trajectory of our political economy,” he said.
“Managerialism still remains a captive vocation in world economy with little contribution. It is rather a technological innovation which has rejuvenated the capital intensive economies of the North,” Prof Malik said.
He added: “We are amazed at the chorus raised by the likes of Infosys chief Narayan Murthy, former Singapore PM Goh Chok Tong and lawyer Kapil Sibal.”
He further said Murthy thought government regulation in higher education had limited the ability of our colleges and universities to adapt to change. “As a result, we have failed to build world class institutions in the country.
The ground reality is just the opposite. Government support and supervision in higher learning institutions has helped India become one of the largest technological personnel reservoir along with a very enlightened crop of social scientists and managerial class in today’s world,” he said.
“Government help and strong inbuilt autonomy builds institutions like JNU, IIMs and IITs,” he said.
