Some time back, a plan to revamp the zoo, envisaging a deer park, was submitted to the state government. The government allocated huge funds for the remodeling. It directed the zoo authorities to get the necessary work done by the PWD.

The PWD agreed to complete the work in a year. But the project got delayed. The quality of work was also found “unsatisfactory” by the zoo authorities, who refused to take charge of the project as it lacked specific standards. The PWD authorities assured to review the project.

Apart from the poor construction of zoo roads, the PWD surrounded the park area by putting a 1,100-meter chain-link along the 35-hectare lake shore on the premises. The area was meant to accommodate about 400 stray deer, which used to loiter on the campus.

All these deer were put at one place in the park. However, during the rains, many of the poles used for supporting the link chain were uprooted. In addition, the chain link had sufficient space, which allowed the deer to escape the enclosure.

They can now be seen strolling in the protected zoo area and destroying the green grass grown on the campus. There are only a few of them in the newly constructed enclosure at the zoo.
