“I was ravaged at least 15 times, there were so many men. I stood under the shower for four hours after I went back to the hotel,” a 51-year-old Danish woman — allegedly gangraped in the heart of the Capital in broad daylight — had told the police in her initial statement.
The statement, accessed by HT two months after the gruesome incident, shows the tourist had initially named more suspects — seven to nine — than the six people police chargesheeted later.
“Initially, she claimed there were seven to nine men involved,” said a police official. “Later, after she sufficiently settled down, she told us seven people had assaulted her,” he added.
A tourist guide from Copenhagen, the woman was allegedly gangraped a short distance from Connaught Place on the afternoon of January 14. She was walking to her Paharganj hotel from the National Museum when she encountered the alleged assailants drinking at the Railway Officers Club.
She stopped and asked them for directions. The men subsequently pinned her down, robbed her and proceeded to rape her.
The incident drew international condemnation with many questioning if India was safe for female tourists.
Within hours of the case being reported, the police had rounded up two local ‘vagabonds’ and followed it up with more arrests.
In early February, the police formally chargesheeted six people — Mahender alias Ganja, Mohammad Raja, Bajji, Arjun, Raju and a juvenile whose identity cannot be revealed. All of them are ‘vagabonds’ frequently migrating from one part of Delhi to another, and are currently in judicial custody at Tihar jail.
