Fogging plea falls on deaf ears

INDOLENCE ON the part of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) might have created difficulties for the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) administration had the institute not taken precaution to contain the menace of the mysterious fever.
However, despite several requests, the KMC has not initiated any effective measure to contain the spread of the deadly dengue mosquitoes on the campus. Besides, it has still not conducted fogging.
Today, a student of MCA first year was shifted to a private nursing home after he complained of high fever in the morning. Chief warden of the institute Dr KM Mishra said that it was expected that the student would be discharged from the nursing home soon as his condition was said to be under control.
According to Mishra, seasonal fever affected over a dozen hostellers in the past month. However, none of them had to be hospitalised for more than one day.
They were discharged after a 24-hour watch on their condition. He said that earlier, lack of transportation posed an impediment in shifting a student to the hospital. He informed that as of now, the institute has acquired two ambulances that are available round the clock.
Institute director Dr RP Singh has given standing instructions to hospital authorities for giving treatment only after conducting detailed pathological examination of sick students. Consequently, chances of deterioration in the condition of a sick student can be reduced.
Repellants have been sprayed in each of the hostel rooms to check these from becoming breeding centres for mosquitoes. Besides, safai karmacharies have been asked to ensure proper cleaning and not to let water stagnate in drains or ponds near the hostels.
The institute has asked KMC to conduct fogging on the campus as the green cover can provide perfect place for dengue mosquitoes to breed.
However, the students alleged that neither did the KMC express its willingness to conduct fogging nor did it cite a reason for keeping mum over the issue. They said that the institute authorities needed to exercise their influence over the KMC health authorities for conducting fogging. They apprehend that delay could cause health hazards in the hostels.
On being contacted, the institute director said that he would take up the matter with the KMC authorities and get the fogging done soon.
