The rush was more at Durga temples with devotees eager to offer milk to the deity. Long queues of people, holding a container filled with milk, were seen outside the places of worship.

On Sunday morning, news went around the city that goddess Durga in Sanjay Nagar’s Durga Devi temple was drinking milk. No sooner the goddess accepted an old woman’s offering, devotees rushed to temples after hearing the news.
In some temples of the city, idol of Ganesha was also drinking milk, reports said. However, no one was willing to confirm that the idols drank milk.

People had different opinions regarding the phenomenon. Some considered it to be mere blind faith, some others termed it a miracle while the rest attributed it all to the handiwork of rumour-mongers. Budhsin (60), a resident of Sanjay Nagar said that he watched a television channel showing the idols to be drinking milk in the temples. However, his area temples did not report any such incident.
SSP Bareilly Anand Swaroop stated that it was matter of faith of Hindu devotees. The top cop added that police force had been deployed around the temples to control heavy rush of the devotees.

Meanwhile, our Kanpur bureau also reports: Late in the evening, long queues of devotees outside all prominent temples, waiting to offer milk to Goddess Durga was a common sight.

Meanwhile, the BJP jumped at the opportunity and organised impromptu prayers at some of the temples.
