Diarrhoea strikes, claims four lives

The deceased has been identified as nine-month old daughter of Dinesh Sahni, Devi and seven-month-old daughter of Rajkumar Sahni, Khushi, both residents of Naya Mahadeo area. Sadhu Chandradev (60), a resident of Gauri Shanker Ashram and Changur (60), a resident of Konia Satti area also fell victim of diarrhoea and died on Sunday.
Apart from this a large number of diarrhea patients mostly under two years of age have been admitted at various Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), private hospitals and government hospitals, including Jamia Hospital in Pili Kothi area, Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital in Kabir Chaura area, Bunkar Hospital in Chowk area etc.
Jamia Hospital, which is situated in a minority-dominated area was seen flooded with diarrhoea patients and several others were seen outside the ward today.
Among other patients who were admitted at the hospital included Mohd Vaish (one year), Manisha (two years), Munna (six months), Najneen (eight months), Ramjan Ali (13 years), Asif Jamal (five years), Jaya Afreen ( one year) and Vishal (three years).
Bakrabad, Jalalipura, Sarraiya, Ausanganj, Ansarabad, Kazzakpura and Konia Satti are among some other areas from where the diarrhoea patients are pouring into hospitals. Hamiddunisa, a resident of Jalalipur area said that supply water was very much contaminated in her area.
“The supply water gives a foul smell and it is hard to consume this water,” lamented Kalawati, a resident of Ausanganj area.
Agitated over the increasing cases of diarrhoea, residents of Mahadev area took two officials of Jal Sansthan as hostage on Sunday.
Later, both the officials were released on the assurance of executive engineer of Jal Sansthan, BN Dwivedi to ensure supply of safe drinking water.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr AP Singh also admitted that contaminated water supply was the main reason behind diarrhea cases in Varanasi. He suggested the patients to rush to near-by government hospital for proper treatment.
