A meeting of the DMK’s top leadership has been called for Sunday evening that is likely to decide the future of Union Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran in the Union Cabinet.

The meeting comes in the wake of a virtual split between the families of DMK Chief Karunanidhi and the two Maran brothers following the attack on the Maran run Dinakaran in Madurai by followers of Karunanidhi’s eldest son, MK Azhagiri.

Maran stayed away from the golden jubilee celebrations of Karunanidhi’s legislature career on Friday, further solidifying the chasm between the two sides. Sources close to Maran indicated that he chose to absent himself since “he did not want such a momentous occasion be spoilt by any untoward incident since many followers of Azhagiri were also part of the crowd.”

In response to a report that Maran had offered to quit the Cabinet, the sources said that it was “too premature since Maran had not met Karunanidhi after the Dinakaran episode.”

Seen against the background of Karunanidhi blaming the Madurai incident solely on the Dinakaran for publishing the opinion poll on Karunanidhi’s heir apparent, the DMK Chief appears to be under immense pressure from his family to take some action against the Maran family.
