The Gurgaon labour department started a 12-day drive against child labour in the district on Friday. The campaign will conclude on the occasion of “World Day Against Child Labour” on June 12.

The drive will focus on sensitising the resident welfare associations (RWAs), small industrial unit owners, restaurant owners and street vendors against employing children under the age of 14.

“Six task forces of the labour department will go out and survey markets, roads and households to identify child labourers,” said Anuradha Lamba, deputy labour commissioner, Gurgaon. Officials of the labour department said most of the child labourers working in Gurgaon had migrated from other states along with their parents or had been brought to the city by their employers.

Earlier on Thursday, secretary of the district legal services authority, Gurgaon, Narinder Kaur had written to the labour department to identify “organised child labour and submit a report on the steps taken against such employers.”
