Police said constable Ramna was escorting an under trial of Rajhamundry central jail who was undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital in Kakinada town, about 500 km from Hyderabad.

The policeman, who was allegedly in an inebriated condition, opened fire from his 303 rifle at about 5 am on Saturday when hospital employees objected to him sitting on a doctor's chair.

While two employees received bullet injuries, another person collapsed in shock. One of the injured is said to be in critical condition.

Ramna has been arrested. District Superintendent of Police Nagi Reddy, who reached the spot, announced his suspension.

The hospital employees went on a flash strike after the incident, demanding stern punishment for the constable.
