Norwegian seismological institute NORSAR said the quake took place at 2:45 pm near Aalesund on the country's western coast, about 400 kilometers northwest of Oslo, the capital.

The quake shook buildings and windows in the area and emergency services were flooded with phone calls, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported.

NORSAR said quakes of this magnitude often take place off the Norwegian coast, but are rare onshore.
