The brake van, the guard van and the two wagons at the rear end of the train derailed on Friday night when it was crossing a small bridge, Divisional Railway Manager, Dhanbad, Ajay Shukla said.

The carriages fell into a rivulet in the Central Industrial Coalfields section, he said.

Shukla said the eight killed were travelling in an unauthorised manner in the brake van. Of the injured, two were railway staff.

He said that it was being ascertained if any were still trapped. The coal-laden train was heading to Panipath from Barwadi.
