In a mass suicide pact, eight persons of a family, including five children and an infant, died after 10 of them jumped in the Shakti Canal near Dakpathar on the outskirts of Dehradun.
According to the police, 11 persons went to the picnic spot in Vikasnagar on Monday night and 10 of them jumped to their deaths, leaving behind the head of the family, Kailasho Devi, 58, tied up with a wire. Devi has been admitted to the Doon Hospital.On Tuesday, police recovered eight bodies. The other two members of the family, belonging to Sewla Kalan area of Dehradun, are also feared dead. Search for their bodies was on till late Tuesday.
Vikasnagar police station in-charge DS Rawat said preliminary investigations suggested it was a suicide pact, as the family was in depression after the eldest daughter Rekha, 35, died due to some ailment three months ago. Rekha’s daughters Bhuri, 8, Tina, 6, and Chhoti, 4, are among the dead.
Rawat said police were informed on Tuesday morning about Devi lying unconscious near the canal. Police also found many empty strips of sleeping pills and footwear of children.
Searching Devi's belongings, they found the phone number of her daughter Rita, who confirmed her mother, brother, three sisters and their children had gone to Dakpathar late on Monday.
Soon after, divers recovered the bodies from near the Dhakrani power house.
Rita told police her mother and three sisters — Ranita, 28, Hemant, 34, and Sony, 22 — were depressed since Rekha’s death and often talked about joining her. The other children have been identified as Pratham, 8, Pradumn, 7, and Golu, 4 months. Efforts were on to trace Ranita’s husband Manoj, 29, and Sony.
