The government plans to incorporate environment as a compulsory subject in education syllabi, MAA Fatima, minister of state for human resource development told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The minister said the National Curriculum Framework (NFC) envisaged that environmental education should be infused at all stages of school education.

Besides the framework being circulated to all states for appropriate action, the University Grant Commission (UGC) too has circulated module syllabi to all universities for environmental studies at the undergraduate level, he said.

“The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has prepared a curriculum framework in environment for teachers and teacher's educators,” Fatima said. The minister did not mention any timeframe for the introduction of the subject as a compulsory one.
