Every UP district to have ?Gandhi Memorial Forest?

Soon all the districts of the State will have 'Gandhi Memorial Forest'. This is being done to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Talking to HT Allahabad Live, Chief Conservator of Forest (Southern Zone), Dr Ashwini Kumar said that with a view to implement this project, the Forest Department will be planting 12 feet high trees on 10 acres of land in each district.

He said that trees will be planted on a total of 700 acres of land in the State between September 26 and October 2, 2006. Dr Kumar said that the initiative will help increase the green cover and improve the environment of each district of the State.

Dr Kumar informed that the work of identifying the land for plantation under the project 'Gandhi Memorial Forest' has already started.

Meanwhile preparations are in full swing by the Forest Department to celebrate Wildlife Week from October 1.

Dr Kumar said, "The week is celebrated all over the country. A large number of programmes and competitions are conducted by the department for students of various schools and colleges during the week."

This year also the department will be holding wildlife photography exhibition and slide shows in schools and colleges. In addition to this, essay writing and debate competitions related to wildlife will also be organised for the children, said Dr Kumar. Places like zoos and wildlife sanctuaries will, however, celebrate the week with a difference.

"A free visit to the zoo and sanctuary are allowed for the students during the week", said Dr Kumar.
