State Minister Ganesh Naik's estranged brother and former Mayor of Navi Mumbai Tukaram Naik (52), passed away after a prolonged illness on Sunday. Tukaram Naik had this year been appointed Navi Mumbai Zilla (district) Shiv Sena Pramukh (head).

Tukaram Naik had been undergoing treatment for sometime at Jaslok hospital. His condition had worsened a few days back following which he had to be put on a ventilator.

Several parts of Navi Mumbai remained closed as news of Tukaram Naik's death spread. Uddhav Thackeray, Manohar Joshi and other top Sena leaders attended the funeral which took place in the evening.

Tukaram had parted ways with Ganesh Naik in 2000 and later rejoined the Sena, which he had quit along with Ganesh Naik. The brothers had reportedly fallen out over the Kalwa Belapur Bank that went bust and in which allegations and counter allegations of corruption had been made.

Following Tukaram Naik's hospitalisation however, there had been a rapprochement between the brothers with Ganesh Naik and his entire family visiting him in the hospital.
