Farmer commits suicide in Vidarbha

The incident comes ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is on tour of Vidarbha region.

A debt ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in the old city area, police said on Friday.

The incident comes ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is on tour of Vidarbha region, where more than 1,600 farmers have allegedly committed suicide in the last five years.

The deceased was identified as Ramdas Ganpat Bhagat (45), who consumed poison in his field on Thursday, police said.

In another incident, a student identified as Shriram Subhash Sapdhare, who secured 64 per cent marks in SSC, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after he could not secure admission to the college of his choice, police said.
