Jaya Bachchan, 66, owns a five-acre plot of land in Sevaniya Gond village, around 15 km from here.

Sources said that since the bank account number of the actress was not known, the Bhopal district administration opened a new account in her name in a cooperative bank in Ratibad, the nearest urban centre, and deposited the Rs 13,000-compensation amount in the account.

In February, when unseasonal rain and hailstorm hit Bhopal and other parts of the state, standing crops of wheat, gram and vegetables on her land were damaged.

In the survey undertaken subsequently, compensation of Rs 13,000 against crop loss was recommended and now the amount has been deposited in her account, said Bhopal tehsildar PS Tripathi.

Jaya Bachchan, wife of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, was born in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh where her writer-stage artist father Taroon Kumar Bhaduri was based.

The actress could not be contacted as she was abroad on a holiday. It was not immediately known whether the actress had bought the land in Sevaniya Gond or inherited it.
