The hub of fashion in the national capital, the upmarket MG Road was on Wednesday targeted by the MCD following the Delhi High Court's orders.
The orders said that malls and shopping complexes in "lal dora" areas that were unauthorised should be demolished.
Some portion of the shopping complex on MG-1 Road, housing outlets of some of the biggest names in the Indian fashion industry, was demolished on Wednesday, MCD officials said.
Parts of the ground floor and first floor of the imposing 55-shop complex were demolished, they said, adding the action will continue on Thursday.
All malls and shopping complexes on MG-1 Road and MG-2 Road are set to be targeted as part of the drive.
There was some panic initially as the MCD personnel arrived in the area to begin their demolition drive against the unauthorised constructions, and the shops were hurriedly cleared up by their owners before the action began.
The action was started under tight police security, the officials said.
Meanwhile, a group of businessmen from the area filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking stay on the demolition drive, which was referred to the Division Bench already hearing the matter pertaining to the ongoing demolition.
