THE RECOVERY of some ballot papers from a garbage dump near a school building in Aishbagh created a flutter in political circles here on Saturday.
Most of these ballot papers were stamped and bore the serial numbers and signatures of the presiding officer of the main polling booth at Rastogi Inter College in Aishbagh. BJP leader and contender for the mayor’s post, Dr Dinesh Sharma told Hindustan Times that it was around 2 pm that he got a call from some Aishbagh residents informing him that ballot papers had been found lying near a garbage dump.
“I am told there were around 150-175 ballots. But nervous over their discovery, a teacher of the Rastogi Inter College burnt most of them by the time my representatives could reach the spot,” said Sharma, adding he still possessed four-five such ballots.
He claimed all the recovered ballots were cast in favour of the BJP and attributed the incident as yet another proof of desperation of the ruling Samajwadi Party to ensure the victory of its candidate by hook or by crook.
Sharma said that he had brought the incident to the notice of the authorities and also lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission.
