Find the truth behind Banerjee’s charges against her predecessor
With reference to the report Mamata derails Lalu’s claims (December 19), the white paper tabled by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee in Parliament states that the performance of Indian Railways was unsatisfactory under her predecessor Lalu Prasad. The government should investigate Banerjee’s accusation that Prasad had fudged the books by showing unaccountable profits worth Rs 90,000 crore. It is a serious matter that involves taxpayers’ money.

BJP finally takes a right step
The new appointments in the BJP will hopefully work well for the party (Digression to opposition, Our Take, December 19). The new party president Nitin Gadkari and the RSS go back a long way, which would influence his working style. Sushma Swaraj’s elevation to the post of the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha is a welcome move. She is a good orator and has remained loyal to the party all along. We hope that the new leadership will help reunite the BJP so that it can once again emerge as a strong Opposition.

The decision to make Nitin Gadkari BJP president is welcome. This change in leadership was necessary to revive the party, which has lost its credibility over the past few years. The new chief should get the party’s act together to ensure that our democracy gets a strong Opposition. He should also try to bridge the gap between the young and the senior members of the party.

Save Goa from human ignorance
Hartman de Souza’s article Lost in transition (December 18) made us aware about Goa’s deteriorating environment, which is a result of human greed and negligence. The state’s suburbs are slowly being converted into dumping grounds and corrupt politicians and locals are turning a blind eye to the impending crisis. The need of the hour is to check the problem before it hits Goa’s tourism industry, which is one of its major sources of revenue.

An opportunity lost
It is quite unfortunate that the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen did not yield the desired results. World leaders have failed to make the best use of the opportunity. The developed nations have passed the buck on to the developing ones. This will lead to many more problems in the future.
